Decorating The Elms 2024

We hope you had a chance to check out some of the holiday decor of at least one of the Preservation Society of Newport properties. We had a blast, as we always do, decorating the Elms on Bellview Ave in Newport for the holidays. This year our schedule had to be adjusted to work around the filming schedule for The Guilded Age. When we got to start our work, we were excited to witness the tail end of production crews packing up the cables and dressing room staging. Areas in the Elms also had to be uncovered due to added protection of the walls from all the moving equipment and furniture that was brought in. On the outside of the building, cranes were being used to get the huge garlands and wreaths up around the main entrance. While Marble House and the Breakers were already decorated and open to the public, we were ready to open by the beginning of December. So much goes into preparing for just one week of decorating! Jim Donahue juggle everything from deciding which decorations to replace for the next year, attending gift shows to coordinate decoration that can also be sold in the gift shops, to scheduling the break down of all three mansions, amongst other tasks, besides his usual responsibilities at the PSN! The PSN and Elms staff also had to arrange the main entrance and ballroom for an event with a visiting dignitary, in the midst of the already tight schedule. Lastly we helped organize the "water closet" where the decorations are stored the rest of the year. Coincidentally, this bathroom has one of the first showers to be installed in Newport, as I was informed by a PSN guide years ago. Unfortunately it is closed to the public. A special thank you to Harold and the rest of the Elms staff for moving the ladders from room to room, amongst other things. Always a pleasure to see the same friendly faces. Until next year...
Dighton Garden Club 2025

I enjoyed an evening with the members of the Dighton Garden Club, during their last meeting on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. We discussed the different types of water features, selecting fish, options of water plants and more. Thank you to Dawn Marie and the group for having me speak.

Mock Job Fair 2025

What a special event for the students. This was the 3rd annual "Mock Job Fair" where students were able to experience what a job fair is all about and what to expect, in the comfort of the school gym. We answered questions and give some guidence. Great job once again by Sandra Noel and the BCAHS team that put this event together, and to all the companies that participated in this special day. Thanks for providing us lunch too. Looking forward to the next event in Sept, I believe. Any local business interested in showcasing your company to these student (possible future employees), contact Sandra at BCAHS.
Newport Flower Show Submission 2024

"Class 5: My Favorite Plants" was the theme given to the "Professional Gardeners Challenge for the 2024 Newport Flower Show. For 2024 the show returned back to Rosecliff, after the major renovations were in progress to the exterior of the property the previous year. For this 'invitation only' category, we were to create an informative display using an aluminum raised bed container (provided), to consist of our favorite plants, provide a guide and description. I was happy to be joined in the challenge with friends and fellow gardeners who are held in high regard. Stiff competition, to say the least, but I enjoyed every minute of it. From creating the design layout on paper, to narrowing down and selecting my favorites to include. I decided to split the display in half, by including a handmade trellis made from my Dad's grave vine clippings as a divider. One side contained an arrangement of my favorite perennials and groundcover plants, such as climbing pink roses, may night sage, liatris, echinacea, gaura, and 'burgundy glow' ajuga. While the other half contained edible favorites such as sunflower, cherry tomatoes, herbs, and pest repelling annuals. I already received my instructions and have started planning this year's entry. "Love what you do, and you'll never work a day in your life.' So true!
